Student Metas as Instructor Formative Assessment

This weekend, I’ve discovered that the students’ metacognitive activities can be formative assessments for the instructor as well.

First, the data. 14/49 students submitted this second meta. That’s four more than the first one. Of these fourteen, 6 students were new, submitting for the first time.

I would characterize this topic (consumer behavior) as primarily theoretical and yet 5/14 submissions listed no theories, only 2 did a good job of identifying the theory of consumer behavior, and the rest were somewhere in between. I guess I didn’t do a very good job of getting the point across. But I do have time to do so before the first exam. I didn’t have an insight like this last semester. Interesting!
